Trincomalee is a coastal bastion which has been an attraction for long time .but this part of the island was inaccessible for travellers until the war ended in 2009.Trincomalee is blessed with natural harbour which became a very important trading port from the past.
the north east part of this island is unpolluted and attract world travellers for its sandy beaches and historic sites.
During the second world war,Trincomalee was the British Naval Head quarters .where they had an airfield from where US planes Operated against the Japanese in Myanmar and Malaysia.
Swami Rock -LOVER LEAP
This High Cliff has a touching History behind it. an inscription on a pillar at the Swami Rock the story goes that in 1687 Francinia Van Reed ,the Daughter of a gentleman of rank in the civil service of Holland was engaged to a young Dutch officer.He broke off the engagement and when his period of foreign service was over in Srilanka ,he left for Holland. the distraught daughter watched the vessel from the promontory of Swami rock and as the ship passed the precipice ,taking away the man she loved .she flung herself from the rock in to the sea. almost 130 meters below in a water grave.
next to swami rock is the hundu temple dedicateto the hindu Giod Shiva.
HOODS TOWER MSEUM
the Naval museum of the Srilankan navy is located at Ostenburg in the peninsular within the naval dockyard.the museum has been named after Samuel Hood,who was the commander of the east indies station.
there is also an observation tower called hoods tower.
one of the most scenic bay in Srilanka . an ideal beach front location to indulge while enjoying the sea breeze.in the evening this place comes alive with food sellers Srilankan street food.
THE COMMONWALTH WAR CEMETERY
During world war 2 .this Naval bastion played host to several thousands of allied forces.many of the officers died during the Japanese bombing of trincomalee I 1942 are buried at this Commonwealth war cemetery.
By far the best stretches of beaches in Srilanka .it has miles long sandy golden beach. Pigeon island is off the coast of Nilaweli is also worth a visit.
Boat rides to the Pigeon island can be negotiated from the few hotels that dot the beach.
built by protugese.the fort was equipped with guns captured from Danish fleet ships. it was initially named the fort of triquilimale by protugese which is in the shape of triangular. in later years the fort was rebuilt by the Dutch. Today the British insignias crown the tunnel like that pierces the fort’s massively thick walls.
